The sun rests
just inches above
the scorched grass.

above soft asphalt
stealing breath

Thermometer in
shade reads one hundred and five—
the birds are panting.
Fly slower
to stay cool?
Or just don’t move?

Summer’s heat immobilizes
everything save the weeds
across the field and
one mockingbird singing
like he doesn’t really mean it.

The hailstorm mulches
my garden with broken glass
and next autumn’s leaves.

Hail ripped the trees bare;
now, winter-bright sunlight falls
disconcertingly from summer’s
corner of the sky.

nothing but naked sticks
in the planters

Three o’clock,
Texas summer day,
100 degrees—
