the city becomes geometry
resisting the fog.

leads me along the fenceline
to cedar waxwings.

pull uphill toward
the dog star.

perched in the parking lot tree
chirps at arriving cars.

capture my dogs’ attention—

A wren’s whistling song
fills the space between the oaks
just before sunrise.

A wary roadrunner
pauses to watch the hikers
walk on down the trail.

I’m wearing brown shoes;
otherwise, today’s walk is
just like yesterday’s.
A pair of vultures spirals,
loops beyond the powerlines.

Safe on the fence,
the possum watches the dogs
practice high jumps.
