On a barbwire fence,
a scissor-tailed flycatcher
faces the southern sky.

A flock of grackles
lands chattering in the oaks.
Acorns thunk on rooftops.

Sidewalk acorns
pop as I walk over them.
The dogs pause.
10.11.10
The half-full feeder
sways in the evening breeze.
Chicka-dee-dee-dee.
10.07.10
A thin line of birds
flows across the dawn sky
tracing autumn.
10.6.10
Starlight and oak trees—
a deer’s big ears quiver.
The dogs sniff the air.

Fresh cut grass.
