  1. somewhere I read a discussion about the “white space” in a haiku — that what was left out is as (or maybe more) important than what is left in. your animal tracks are a perfect illustration of that — the hoofprints, the birdsong.
    what is actually there, and what the mind puts into the blank space.

    • Angie, I’ve read that too. I often find myself resisting to impulse to fill them up. When I succeed, I think I get better results.

      I’m reading Basho right now, and the translator’s intro mentioned something similar. Something to the effect that in haiku, part of the poem is formed in the reader’s mind and only part exists on the page.
