shadows race across a brown field;
vultures ride the crystal air.

goldfinches and sparrows hold still as statues;
a falcon has stopped time.

butterflies swarm around my legs trying to trip me,
trick me into thinking springtime thoughts

goldfinches explode across the sharpest of winter blue skies,
disappearing into trees faster than a dream

Watched a hawk fly overhead, unable to tell if it was Cooper’s or Sharp-shinned.

The hawk just said, “Call me Stan.”

a sky so blue it cuts and burns

a cormorant stands still with wings outstretched,
a statue in the fog.

dreaming of desert… tall juicy mesas, light glaze of wind, succulent saguaro in full bloom.
